Double Deep Pallet Racking
A number of pallet rack storage systems are available on the market to meet a variety of needs. Some pallet racking systems are best suited for high product turnover and volume, while other pallet racking systems may cater to low product turnover and volume, or a different mix of both. One pallet storage system that is gaining popularity today is double deep pallet racking. We will describe the basic anatomy of double deep racking and the advantages that make it such a popular choice. We will also cover the potential disadvantages of double deep pallet racking and what you should know about your warehouse and equipment before making a decision.
Double-Depth Pallet Racking Anatomy
In a 100% selective pallet racking system, a single row of pallet racking is placed back-to-back with another row of pallet racking. This means that each pallet is directly accessible. This is a very common storage solution, but with much less storage density than a double-deep pallet racking system. This is because double-deep pallet racking consists of two rows of pallet racks set back-to-back, hence the term “double-deep”.
The concept of double deep pallet racking is similar to 100% selective pallet racking, but now there are a total of four instead of two rows per aisle. This makes double deep pallet racking a first-in-first-out (FILO) pallet racking system.
Advantages of double-deep pallet racking
The most obvious advantage of double-deep pallet racking is its potential to increase storage density and maximize warehouse space. Double deep pallet racking eliminates unnecessary aisles, which means more warehouse space is available for storage. This feature makes double deep pallet racking systems one of the most cost and space efficient options available. In addition, double-deep pallet racking offers the same density as a 2-deep push pallet racking system, but at a fraction of the cost. Depending on your storage needs, installing a double deep pallet rack system can eliminate the need to build or rent new storage space.
Disadvantages of Double Deep Pallet Racking
The biggest disadvantage of double-deep pallet racking is the need for a dedicated forklift to access the pallets. Most forklifts are designed to only access pallets on a single-deep system. This means that in order to successfully utilize a double deep pallet racking system, one needs to invest in a double deep forklift or expand and balance the current forklift. However, many find that these costs are offset by the benefits of double-deep racking.
Again, since there is no “one size fits all” solution for storage needs, you need to know your product volume and turnover rates, as well as available warehouse space and forklift type before deciding if a double deep pallet racking system is right for you.
